Enhancing and improvising our standards in order to match ourselves with the global standards would definitely make us to top the race.
There are mixed reactions for the new terminal T3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi. The new terminal, ‘Terminal 3’ is a huge step of innovation. The developments and the emerged infrastructure style of the airport are really amazing and in a way, it is difficult to implement the changes, as it is not owned by a single hand. The Delhi International Airport Limited is an initiative of public, private partnership comprising of the hands of GMR Group, Air Authority of India, Frankfort AG, Era man Malaysia, and India Development Fund. Each group in the association should believe in the changes and accomplishments of the same. Whatever may be the case, the new terminal has made the Delhi Airport to be listed in the world’s best airports, hats off to each group of the association for having faith in implementing global standards in India.
Pros
- Huge capacity in handling more than 30 million passengers, per annum.
- Built with world class infrastructure facilities and best technological features, on the whole accounting to a cost of Rs. 12, 700 crore.
- The new integrated international terminal, Terminal 3 at Indira Gandhi international airport is been operated in a vast area of 5.4 million square feet. Hence, it is said that there would not be any need for a passenger to wait more than 10 minutes in any of the counters like, security check, baggage screening, etc…
- It is also bearing the fame of the world’s sixth largest airport with a record of 78 aerobridges.
- Huge efforts have been taken to maintain the green environment. There are around 310 rain water harvesting pits at the terminal 3, which are accomplished with an objective to conserve water. Cons
- Only provides international operations at the moment.
- The domestic aviation operations were delayed for three times, until now, due to lack of capabilities in supplying power, water supply, Commonwealth Games, traffic congestion, etc…
- The ‘Terminal 2’ which was providing the international service is left without any usages, due to the shift of international operations to the new terminal, ‘Terminal 3’. As such, the plan was to change the low costs international aviation operations to the Terminal 2, but couldn’t execute it, because of many reasons…
- Facilities like, providing the live flight information and timing schedule has made the Delhi Airport to become an example for global benchmarking standards.
Future happenings
- Terminal 4 & 5 are planned to be built at the later stages. If built, the entire international operations would be shifted to these two terminals, whereas the recent new terminal 3 would be handling the entire domestic operations.
- It is also expected that a separate cargo building would be built to enhance the cargo and freight operations.
- If these new innovations are implemented, then the passenger volume is expected to increase to 100 million per annum.
- Projects with the objectives to convert the municipal waste to electricity and other green enhancement projects are expected to make drastic changes in the coming year.
